Our Company History

Collingwood Richardson & Company Limited was founded in 1984 by Donald Richardson after spending some thirty years working for insurance companies and national brokers.

Donald first worked for the Commercial Union in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, before spending time with the Royal in Johannesburg and working in London for The Federated and later Stewart Smith Insurance brokers.

He arrived in Shrewsbury in 1976 and worked for the broker Brentnal Beard, which in turn became Hogg Robinson.

In 1984 with the support of a loyal core of commercial customers he decided to go it alone and has not looked back.

The company has grown steadily every year since and is still situated in the rural Shropshire village of Pontesbury.

Donald’s son Alan joined the business in 1998 following University and a few of years in Industry.

The company continues to prosper by offering straight forward honest and impartial advice in a personal and professional manner to a range of commercial and personal clients.

Collingwood Richardson & Company Limited is a wholly independent insurance brokerage. In April 2009, we became members of The Willis Towers Watson Networks, allowing us to retain our independence whilst gaining benefit from the resources of one of the worlds largest Insurance Brokers.

We are members of BIBA, The British Insurance Brokers Association and we are Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Collingwood Richardson & Company Limited is recognised by our peers in the insurance industry both locally and nationally as a company of the highest level of professionalism and integrity, providing a first class service to our commercial and personal clients.

Our Illustrious Forefather:

Cuthbert Collingwood, Baron Collingwood, Vice-Admiral of the Red (1750-1810). Nelson’s ‘Dear Coll’ was a quiet Northumbrian and they began a lifelong friendship as lieutenants in the West Indies. As captain of the Excellent, 74 guns, he distinguished himself at Cape St Vincent and in 1799 took over the Channel Fleet as rear-admiral. He was second-in-command at Trafalgar in the Royal Sovereign, 100 Guns, and on Nelson’s death remained in command of the Mediterranean Fleet. He never saw England again, dying on the way home.
